Spring semester of senior year. This is it. Make it or break it time.
Let me warn you that you may think you have senioritis now. You do not. You have no idea the depths to which your senioritis will plunge this semester.
A gentle reminder that the semester isn’t over until you turn in your final exam. Stay with me. You can do this. You MUST do this. In only five short months, you will look back at all your accomplishments and be so amazed.
My expectations of you are the same: excellence. Show me what you’ve got.
Tuesday 1/5: Normal beginning of semester stuff. Discuss journaling element [new this semester!]. Journaling intro
Parallels for this semester:
Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
ASSIGNMENT: Bring your vocab book tomorrow. We will begin with lesson 7. Also: Purchase a journal. It can be a spiral notebook. It can be a composition notebook. It can be a fancy-pants journal. So long as it is bound in some sturdy fashion. It will be kept in a special place in the classroom. You must have this by Monday or you will risk losing points on a writing grade.
Wednesday 1/6: We will tackle prompt #1 today and you will be required to paste/staple/attach with magic to your permanent journal, if you don’t already have it.
Vocab lesson 7. Quiz next Friday, 1/15.
Journal Prompt #1: Write about a time when you knew you’d done the right thing.
Thursday 1/7: We will be watching an intro video along with a viewing guide. Yes this begins the Dante unit and all materials could be covered on the assessment.
We will be signing up for group slots for a Tour Of (Dante’s) Hell. See the calendar for dates that each group is going.
AP Lang 12
Tuesday 1/5: Normal beginning of semester info, class sheets, etc. Please see the syllabus for a refresher and this semester’s parallel reading is at the end. AP Lang 12 2015_2016.docx
Briefly discuss the idea of PopeX and watch a sample TedX video.
Also, sign up for a TYFA [Thank You For Arguing] teaching slot. 3 people per group, MAX. They will usually be on Fridays but the first will be next Monday with that group getting the benefit of some smaller chapters and my complete adoration of their bravery.
ASSIGNMENT: read “On Enmity” in Best American Essays [BAE] and be prepared to discuss it rhetorically and otherwise tomorrow. Use the SOAPSTONE as a guide, but you are not required to fill one out.
Refresher on SOAPSTone
soapstone graphic organaizer for rhetorical analysis
Wednesday 1/6: Discuss “On Enmity” from BAE. Breakdown the Reggie Watts metamodernist Ted talk BEFORE we watch it. Then watch it. If you are so inclined, please take a look at the HuffPo article: Reggie Watts Ted Talk that deconstructs further [I’m using it for my notes today].
Thursday 1/7: Today we will begin brainstorming potential areas of expertise for our eventual PopeX talks. [Don’t worry, you will have PLENTY of notice for when we are doing these, both in class and the big show.]
