Welcome to my class! I teach both AP Lang 12 and World Literature. I am so very excited to get to know you this year. I teach all seniors and I am the senior sponsor so I do like to think of myself as a senior specialist. I really enjoy this grade because you are in this cool transition between childhood and adulthood. My goal [besides teaching English and making sure you can communicate and decipher the written word] is to make you aware of the possibilities ahead of you and try to help mold you into a well-rounded citizen of the world.

First Week Information
-writing utensils, both pencil and pen
-college ruled paper
-some form of folder or at least a section of a larger binder that is dedicated to this class. Make sure you have a pocket to slide info in quickly if you don’t have the opportunity to hole punch.
– backup storage for files. I am a HUGE fan of online file saving like Google Drive. HOWEVER, and please learn this lesson now, you should always back up important files in multiple places. A flash drive can be had for under ten dollars in some places. Get one and you can use it for all of your classes. Every year I get someone approach me with a sad face and a tale of lost documents. Guess what? Retyping/redoing is a pain. Much easier to save something twice.
-reliable internet access: It’s ok if it’s not at home, but have a place you can go, or work out your schedule to use the media center after school or the public libraries. By now you know that the internet and computers are woven into school life. Also, if you are absent but a long-term assignment is due, you will be expected to get it in, so make sure you can communicate with me electronically.
Class items that we could use:
-box of tissue- if just half my students brought in ONE box of tissues, we would be supplied for the entire year. I certainly don’t mind springing for the odd box here and there, but you guys go through A LOT.
-classic markers- at times we do some creative type assignments to look at concepts in a different way and by the end of the year my markers are all work out. Again, if just HALF of you brought one box in, we would be set!!
-highlighters- don’t have to be fancy! I do like to keep some for various close reading activities.
-hand sanitizer- I don’t use this stuff as a rule unless i’m in the backcountry hiking [giardia is not fun] but students occasionally ask me for it and if you think you might use it, please consider donating one.
-paper towels- we have these new tile floors and we need to ensure that any spilled water doesn’t become a safety issue.
Please see the week one entry for syllabus and other info.
